The Regional Administration of Smolyan (PB7) launched the construction works implemented in the framework of the project “Cross-border planning and infrastructure measures for flood protection” (FLOOD PROTECTION), with the construction of the supporting walls in Smolyan, Zlatograd and Rudozem.

The project aims to increase the level of protection against floods in the cross-border area of Greece and Bulgaria; especially across the three international rivers of Strymon-Struma (and Kerkini Lake), Nestos-Mesta, and Evros-Maritsa, areas which have faced severe flood incidents during the last years.

The main activities of the Regional Administration of Smolyan (PB7) include:
1. The construction of a retaining wall on Petar Beron Street, next to the Roman Bridge, on the right bank of the Cherna river in the town of Smolyan;
2. (a)The construction of a new protective reinforced concrete wall on the left bank of the Varbitsa river in Izgrev and  (b) the construction of a reinforced concrete wall in Izgrev quarter, on the left bank of the Varbitsa river – the section after the bridge on Progres Street in Zlatograd;

“In the past three years, pre-feasibility studies, designs and public procurements were carried out in order to prepare the FLOOD PROTECTION project in a way to be as useful as possible” said the Regional Governor of Smolyan, Mr.  Nedyalko Slavov. He expressed his gratitude to everyone who has made efforts to realise the project: the Mayors and the Municipal Councils of Smolyan, Zlatograd and Rudozem for their quick decisions, the Engineer Mr. Golemilov who started this project in its pre-investment phase, the supervisors, and his colleagues from the Regional Administration of Smolyan for their tireless work.

The Regional Governor wished the builders a successful and fruitful work in order to finish the construction works qualitatively and on time. “With the first sod in the construction of the supporting walls in Rudozem, Smolyan and Zlatograd, we give a clear sign that the European funds under the Cooperation Program solve, above all, the problems of the population in the cross-border region” Mr. Slavov concluded.

The total value for the execution of the construction works for the three lots is 2,145,943.51 BGN (VAT included). The project is implemented within the framework of the Cooperation Programme INTERREG V-A “Greece-Bulgaria 2014-2020” and is co-financed by the European Union, through the European Regional Development Fund, and the national contribution of Bulgaria and Greece.
