Project "My Caves": Press release

The Municipality of Nea Zixni is excited to announce that on Wednesday 26 February 2020, at its premises located in the beautiful city of Nea Zixni, held the kick-off meeting of the project “Modernization, promotion and exploitation of caves – My Caves” which is implemented under Interreg V-A Cooperation Programme “Greece - Bulgaria 2014-2020”, co-funded by the European Union and by national funds of the participating countries.
My Caves is a long term project that is going to last for 2 years and engage five partners from both countries namely the Municipality of Nea Zixni (GR) which is the project coordinator, the Alistrati Cave S.A. (GR), the Public Benefit Enterprise of Municipality of Prosotsani (GR), the Tourist Organization “Karlak” (BG) and the “Rodopeya” Tourist Association (BG).
At the meeting, the mayor of Municipality of Nea Zixni, Pantelis Bozis, in his welcoming speech emphasized the project’s primary aim is to incorporate innovative, state of the art methods in order to render cave sites in the cross - border area an attractive thematic tourism destination. Caves also constitute a valuable scientific resource, providing evidence of human cultural change, the development of the landscape and climate changes. The project MyCaves will strive to maintain and seek to improve interest in visiting caves, to encourage and support cave conservation, to apply innovative techniques pertaining to technology to disseminate acquired knowledge and outline the importance of sites of speleological interest and organize meetings and events, including training to raise awareness on all aspects regarding the importance of preserving caves and their significance as sites of natural heritage and scientific interest. The project is expected to increase the attractiveness of cave sites in the cross - border area and the number of people visiting.
Apart from the extended presentation of all project aspects by LB’s project manager, the participants planned and prepared detailed framework of their implementation activities, talked through and agreed on issues including the project management team, the communication plan, implementation rules, and committed to come up in due time with a detailed timetable of project implementation.
