Project FLOOD PROTECTION: opening ceremony for the restored protective dike on the Krumovitsa River - entrance of Krumovgrad

The Regional Governor of Kardzhali Nikola Chanev held an official opening ceremony for the restored protective dike on the Krumovitsa River at the entrance of Krumovgrad. The construction works were part of the FLOOD PROTECTION project, implemented with EU funds under the Cooperation Programme INTERREG VA "Greece - Bulgaria 2014-2020". The event was attended by the Mayor of the municipality Mrs. Sebihan Mehmed, representatives of the contractor and the supervisor, municipal councilors, citizens, experts from the regional and municipal administration.
Special guests of the opening were the representatives of the Joint Secretariat and the Managing Autority of the Programme, Mrs. Galina Georgieva and Mr. Dimitris Liatsis, who appreciated the high work done in the river bed for flood prevention and emphasized that the constructed safety facility is a clear example of the appropriate absorption of European funds for the benefit of people and the improvement of the infrastructure.
The dike's function is to protect the Momchilgrad - Krumovgrad road from the high waters of the river, which flooded farmland and threatened to cut off the road. The regional governor congratulated the designers, contractors and the supervision for the high quality implementation.
Mayor Sebihan Mehmed said the project addresses one of the city's most painful problems and its benefits are complex - both for road infrastructure, for agricultural land and for water management. The project was implemented under the project "Cross-border Planning and Infrastructural Measures for Flood Protection", under which the Regional Administration of Kardzhali partnered with four administrations from Bulgaria and three from Greece. In addition to the strengthening of the Krumovitsa dike, a protective dike on the Dzhebelska River near the village of Tyutyunche was built in the district of Kardjali.

On the 2nd of December 2019 the Regional Administration of Kardzhali hosted the 5th Project Meeting of the project "Cross-Border Planning and Infrastructural Measures for Flood Protection", implemented under the under the INTERREG V-A Cooperation Program "Greece - Bulgaria 2014-2020".
The meeting was attended by the regional governors of Kardjali, Smolyan, Haskovo and Blagoevgrad with their expert teams, the partners from the Region of Central Macedonia and the Region of East Thrace and Macedonia, as well as representatives of the Joint Secretariat of the Cross-border Cooperation Program. The special guest of the meeting was the President of the National Assembly, Tsveta Karayancheva, who congratulated the partners and emphasized that the project is of utmost importance for the quality of life and improvement of the infrastructure in the border regions. Such large-scale investments are proof of the direct benefits of the European solidarity.
