The project is aimed at improving access to two of the most important ancient monuments in the Prefectures of Evros and Rodopi. Both historical monuments which are situated in present time in municipalities of Ardino and Didimotika are dating from I-II century AD. Both sites are part of the network routs of via Egnatia. Anyone who wants to follow in the path of the invaders should visit these sites and learn about the history of the two regions.
Trough reviling the remains of ancient history we will remind people of the border region that we see today as differences between us is actually what makes us the part of one civilization because we are all ancestors of Thracians tribe. As their descendants we still keep their traditions and their culture, which is transmitted through the centuries.
Through this project we want to remind people in the border region that we are all citizens of Europe and our common past is the key to our common future. Through the implementation of this project the tourists and visitors of the two municipalities Ardino and Didymoteicho will have the opportunity to get to know the culture and the heritage of the Thracians, their customs and crafts.
The approaches to two important historical monuments – the Devils bridge and the fortress of Didymoteicho will be rehabilitated and upgraded.. Thousands of tourists visit every year these historic monuments but never come back due to poor maintenance and difficult access to the sites.
The construction activities, festivals and other activities envisaged in the project will significantly improve the access of visitors and tourists to the two sites and also will present to people from the two border communities to learn that they are not only related by wars and battles, but have a common livelihood.
The planned activities correspond to the priorities of the program and aim to preserve the common historical heritage that dates back to Byzantine times. In a world torn by differences it is important to find a ground for common future with our neighbors even it is on foundations of the millennium old historical monuments.
The project is not based on promoting the specifics of each region but to outline what is common between them. In order to facilitate the access for Greek tourists and diminish language barrier municipality of Ardino envisage to hold Greek language courses for employees in municipality of Ardino who will subsequently pass on their knowledge to local communities involved in tourism services. preparation of information signs and guidelines in Greek will be placed.
The two festivals that will be organized aims to ouline similarities in lifestyle of the two border municipalities and create conditions for long-term partnership not only in tourism but in other economical areas. The project aims to bring relations between the partner to the time when Thracians and Byzantines were best trading partners and neighbors.
